Located in the northern Caribbean on the border with Nicaragua.
It includes 50kms. of coastline and 92,000 hectares of channels, lagoons, rivers, river islands, forests, marshes, holillo forests and hills-ancient volcanic ones. All of the sites are no higher than 230 metres above sea level. A sheet of water covers two thirds of the land, including over 2,700 hectares of marshes.
This very hot and humid climate, without any dry season is home to the endangered West Indian Manatee, caymans, crocodiles, gars and numerous schools of tarpon. It is also the habitat of tapirs, jaguars, cougars, howler and white faced capuchin monkeys, ocelots, jaguarundies, and three-toed sloths, among other mammals.the bird population includes species such as the osprey, keel billed toucan, Neoptropic cormorant, great blue heron, white hawk, great tinamou, curassow, and red-lored amazon.
