Guanacaste

1.1 km off Zacate Point and 3.5 kms off the coast of Nicaragua.

This little very rugged, windswept island consists of approximatley 25 hectares and is almost 80 mts high. The lenght of the dry season, the winds and the broken terrain gives rise to a very dry tropical forest of the deciduous scrub variety with some medium size trees, such as frangipani and the alfaje, where the magnificent frigatebirds build their nests.

Bolaños Islands is the only known nesting site of the American Oystercatcher and is one of the few places where there are nesting colonies of brown pelicans. Other species that live on the island are magpie jays, black vultures, ctenosaurs, and several species of bats and crabs. There are no facilities on the refuge site.
