Heredia

The forests in this reserve are extraordinarily important, not only for the protection they provide for the enormous system of drainage basins that exist here, but also because they form a biological corridor connecting Braulio Carrillo, Irazú Volcano and Turrialba Volcano National Parks. Two very characteristic species in these forests are the tree-ferns (Cyathea fulva) and poor man’s umbrella (Gunnera insignis), with its enormous leaves. A few dirt roads leave from Sacramento and Rancho Redondo and go a little way into the southern part of the reserve.
