Find you way around Costa Rica with this complete set of travel and
road maps below, sectioned into popular areas, towns, and
attractions, in alphabetical order. Since most visitors still arrive
at the international airport outside of San Jose, use this map of greater San Jose
to find your way into the city. When in San Jose itself, use this street map of
downtown San Jose. However, with San Jose's confusing labyrinth
of one-way streets, at times crushing congestion and lack of parking
space, we suggest that you would be less stressed in taking one of
the inexpensive and ubiquitous taxis. (It seems at times that every
5th car is a taxi in the downtown area!) In the left hand margin,
below the link menu, are street maps of other
popular and more populated cities. Enjoy your travel and / or
vacation in Costa Rica!
People refer to the map of the Six Regions
of Costa Rica, below, which basically describe the area of the
country in terms of location, weather, and activity. For instance,
the Central Region is in the mountainous central highlands where the
weather is cooler and you will find most of the population living in
greater San Jose. Also, it is there that the wonderful Costa Rican
coffee is grown!
Any region with "Pacific" or "Caribbean"
attached to it will be closer to or at the Pacific and Atlantic
Oceans, and therefore will be warmer and, of course, have the
beautiful beaches and surf for which Costa Rica is well known. What a
great place to vacation, and where most visitors prefer to go!

Costa Rica also has Seven Provinces. Click on the links to the left for more information. Provinces are actually legal jurisdictions of the country, each with its own local court system and building guidelines, etc.. However, people often refer to these areas to describe location and activity also. Basically described, Provinces are:
Alajuela - Mountains and International
Airport area in the central highlands.
Cartago
- Mountains and suburbs of the central highlands.
Guanacaste - Beautiful "Gold Coast" northern
Pacific Beaches and prarie.
Heredia -
More mountains and suburbs of central highlands.
Limón - Caribbean, Atlantic Ocean coast,
beaches, banana port.
Puntarenas -
Central Pacific coast, also part of the "Gold Coast"; Port Caldera.
San José - Capital and suburbs in the central
highlands.
