More About The Rio Celeste and the Tenorio Volcano National Park:

The Rio Celeste, and the Tenorio Volcano National Park in which it is located, are located about 40 minutes east of Cañas. It is not visited as much as other attractaions like the Arenal Volcano, probably because unlike the volcano area, you have to hike up to the blue river, lagoon and the Celeste Waterfall, whereas the Arenal Volcano can be seen from a distance.

The hike to the Rio Celeste starts from the entrance of the Tenorio Volcano National Park and takes about an hour and a half. It is an easy walk some of the way, through a relatively cool, primary growth rainforest / cloud forest. Parts of the hike get fairly steep, and to get to the waterfall itself, the last distance is quite step, but overall, well maintained and safe.

Along the way, is the beauty of the flora and fauna, the ferns and hanging moss, so typically associated with a cloudforest atmosphere and the shading of the tall primary forest trees. There is an observation platform along the way that overlooks the valley, and then you will arrive at the Rio Celeste River and Lagoon. The amazing blue color is caused by a constant flow of minerals supplied by the Tenorio Volcano, and the resulting chemical reaction from the blending of two rivers at its source. It is really an overwhelmingly beautiful site to see, a just reward for the adventure and nature traveler willing to hike the distance. Although not recommended by a few signs, there are thermal hot springs along the way, and of course the river and waterfall pool where hikers often take a dip.

To drive to the Tenorio Volcano National Park and the River Celeste, leaving from San Jose, take the Interamerican Highway to Cañas. About 6 miles after Cañas is a turnoff to Bijagua, a small quaint town with a few restaurants and grocery stores. About 20 miles past Bijagua, you will find the entrance to the Park. Enjoy the hike to one of the most spectacular sites in Costa Rica!
