It protects part of the paramos in the highest parts of the Cordillera de Talamanca, and the oak forsests (Quercus) surrounding them. The sooty robin (Turdus nigrescens), a bird that lives in high mountain areas, is quite common there. The historic road that joins the Central valley to San Isidro de El General crosses this reserve. The 3,156 m high Vueltas Hill is situated next to the Panamerican Highway (km 74) and is an excellent look-out point covering a wide area of the country.
