Nowadays, the forests in this reserve are fragmented. The most numerous tree species are banak (Virola koschnyi), purpleheart (Peltogyne purpurea) – a species with extremely beautiful purple wood – and camibar (Copaifera camibar) the sap of which is known as camibar oil and is used in popular medicine to cure wounds. This area is a biological corridor connecting Corcovado National Park with Piedras Blancas National Park. The Chacarita to Puerto Jiménez highway crosses a large part of this reserve.
