Although its dry forests have been much disturbed, this refuge serves as a biological corridor between the Carara Biological Reserve and the Cerro Turrubares Protection Zone. This refuge, whose soils have no potential for agriculture, needs to be recovered in order to realise the project to create the biological corridor between Carara and La Amistad Complex promoted by the Green Iguana Foundation. A few dirt roads from Tárcoles on the Orotina-Jacó highway allow visitors a little way into this refuge.
