Guanacaste

Playa Potrero is located near the Flamingo area. To get there, take the route Liberia- Guardia- Filadelfia- Belén- Huacas- Playa Brasilito-Playa Potrero. The road stops being paved about 4 kms after Playa Brasilito. the 4 kms of clear - sand beaches are encompassed to the west by the hills and cliffs of Punta Salinas and to the north by the cliffs of Punta Ostional. Beyond it extends a large plain, at one time bathed by the Flandense Sea, which ventured inland one kilometre farther from where the coast is today. this episode was the result of a thaw that raised the water level approximatley 4 meters during the Holocene Era, some 6000 years ago.

Seasonal waterways that flow into the bay give raise to three estuaries: Cacao, Plantanar, and Salinas, the latter covered with saltwater forests

The beaches are drenched in sunshine, this being one of their most valued attractions. The sun shines between 11-12 hours a day during the dry season (December-April), heating the coastal system with an average maximum temperature of 36°C during March and April, and an average annual temperature of 27.7°C Rainfall is around 1800 mm, but last only a short time, giving way to an exhausting drought where streches of tawny terrain alternate with grassland and stands of mayflower, wild cotton, swollen-thorn acacia and some cacti.
