Not Necessarily Your "Picture Above the Sofa"...  Our first stop on a typical Wednesday art tour was at the home and studio of one of the most recognized artists in Costa Rica, Rodolfo Stanley. His studio home in Tibas, of his own design, is in a quiet neighborhood. A vaulted ceiling up through the first level to the second floor exposes a skylight on each side of the wall to let in the indirect daylight for the most perfect lighting of his artist studio. Rodolfo has recently shifted his style from a “magical realism,” featuring voluptuous women and others in typical Costa Rican park settings to a focus on the Costa Rica nightlife, active, sexual, provocative. In many cases, the strong colors and forms he uses are his expression of real life Latin America and they stand apart in an environment for serious art collectors. Pictured above, looking at an art gift from his daughter, painter and mixed media artist Erika Stanley, he muses merrily about the private connotations conveyed from one artist to another through an esoteric composition.
 Concentrating on the human figure as it really is, not as the model might wish it to be, Rodolfo plays with colors, textures and especially motion in a way that only an artist comfortable with himself can do successfully. This freedom of expression was especially evident in a series of his paintings about some current political events. So powerful were those portrayals that he joked that whomever buys such a piece should be rich enough to take the heat! Frankly, in my mind, they were the most thought provoking and creative. Also in his studio were an assortment of numbered, mono-color prints. Rodolfo Stanley's work has been featured in New York galleries and he is well known among local residents. In addition to Costa Rica, Rodolfo Stanley exhibits internationally - most recently in Miami, Florida and Seville, Spain.
