Jaco is a small, yet extremely active town geared towards surfers, parties and nightlife. As you walk down the “strip,” you will find countless surf shops, restaurants, bars, discos and a variety of accommodations. This is the ideal destination for surfers or young travelers looking to be in the middle of the action. A yearly international surf contest is also held in the nearby Playa Hermosa that attracts a huge number of surfers from all over the globe to this beach. You need to be careful about swimming here, as riptides are quite common along the beach shore. Other local activities include fishing, canopy tours, kayaking and horseback riding. Jaco Beach, Hermosa Beach and Esterillos Beach are some of the beaches closer to San Jose (2-hour drive) and connect to each other by cliffs and small reefs. All of them are long black sand beaches with good waves. Not ideally for swimming you must be aware of strong tide currents. For a more relaxed stay and more beach time, you can stay outside Jaco. Here beaches are more clean, and you will be surrounded by nature. Hermosa is a golden-sand beach stretches 1,500 meters before meeting the blue-green waters of the Pacific. It’s a typical beach on a small, semi-open bay with great waves all along the coast. Lush vegetation borders the beach, with hills on both sides, offering beautiful scenery. Esterillos are serene beaches with very few hotels and private houses. All basic services such as emergency centers, convenience stores, gas stations are also available nearby.
