TORTUGUERO CANALS

The canals and rivers of Tortuguero National Park are one of Costa Rica's most popular eco-tourism destinations. The park and small town of Tortuguero can only be accessed by boat or small aircraft. The lodges provide comfortable accommodations, knowledgeable natural history guides, boats and family-style dining for their guests. Considered one of the world´s major nesting sites for the Atlantic green turtle, you can see these great creatures between July and October.

Day 1 : San José - Tortuguero

The trip begins early with breakfast at a local restaurant en route to the embarkation point. You'll drive through the spectacular rain forests of Braulio Carrillo National Park, just 30 minutes from San José. A two-hour boat trip through the canals will take you to your lodge just in time for lunch.
You will be at your leisure in the afternoon to experience the local culture and habitat, visit some of the area's wonderful natural attractions, walk the nature trails, relax in a luxurious hammock or take the Tour into the town of Tortuguero and the museum. Our resident biologist will present a slide show on Tortuguero natural history in the early evening and, in season; an optional night tour will take you to view the nesting turtles.

Return to the lodge for lunch. Afterwards take an optional hiking trip to the Cerro de Tortuguero. It provides impressive views on the whole valley of Tortuguero and from the trail it is easy to discover its different species of inhabitants among which are three different kinds of monkeys, sloths, caimans, turtles, iguanas, poison arrow frogs and many birds and insects including the blue butterfly (Morpho peleides).
