Four Seasons brings aspects of Costa Rican adventure and culture directly to guests with a series of lectures and demonstrations from local and international experts, as well as cultural performances.

A “Who’s Who” in the Animal Kingdom - Costa Rican wildlife viewing rivals the African safari experience. Monkeys, sloths, armadillos, anteaters, kinkajous, cacomistles, jaguars, ocelots, jaguarundis, agoutis, tapirs and peccaries are just a few of the 260 species of mammals inhabiting the forests – some of which can be seen on the Resort’s property. Reptiles include turtles, iguanas and lizards. Amphibians range from red frogs with blue legs to orange toads. Considered a birdwatcher’s paradise the forests, rivers and coastline thrive with nearly 635 species of birds, including macaws, parrots, toucans, quetzals, hummingbirds, herons, storks, jacanas and egrets. North American birders visiting during the northern winter can recognize their native birds -- warbles, flycatchers, orioles and others that migrate to Costa Rican every winter. Butterflies also flutter about in a kaleidoscope of colours. With marine currents dredging nutrients from the ocean’s depths, Costa Rica’s aquatic biodiversity flourishes with 835 species of fish. The aquatic ecosystem teems with marlin, sailfish, tuna, dorado, wahoo, roosterfish and snook for spectacular sport fishing, most of which is catch and release.

Turtle Nesting - During the beginning of the dry season, the giant Leatherback, the world’s largest reptile, and the Pacific Ridley Sea Turtle, the smallest of the six sea turtle varieties, nest along the Pacific Beaches. Las Baulas National Marine Park and Ostional National Wildlife Refuge provide viewing areas that do not interfere with the turtles’ laying eggs.



Canopy Tours, Costa Rica Resort Four Seasons, Five StarNational Reserves - Within 60 kilometres (37 miles) of the Resort, visitors can explore some of the nation’s best protected wilderness areas: Palo Verde National Park, one of Central America’s largest protected wildlife areas with its wet and dry ecosystem, ideal for viewing birds, mammals and reptiles; Santa Rosa National Park, the nation’s first established natural park protecting the largest remaining area of tropical dry forest in the region; Cabo Blanco Natural Reserve, a tropical moist forest with trails, beaches, tide pools and abundant birds and wildlife; Guanacasta National Park, a habitat with dry, rain and cloud forests; and Monteverde Cloud Forest, home of the Resplendent Quetzal and other birds and mammals.

Sportfishing - With marine currents dredging nutrients from the ocean’s depths, Costa Rica’s aquatic biodiversity flourishes with 835 species of fish. The aquatic ecosystem teems with marlin, sailfish, tuna, dorado, wahoo, roosterfish and snook for spectacular sport fishing, most of which is catch and release. The Nicoya Peninsula is prime for diving and snorkelling excursions to view rays and huge schools of fish.

Geological Explorations - The region’s oldest geological formations are found in Barra Honda National Park with its impressive limestone caverns full of stalactites and stalagmites. Amazing geothermal features can be seen at Rincón de la Vieja National Park dotted with fumaroles, hot springs and bubbling mud pots. Other volcanoes in the Guanacaste Mountain Range are Orosi, Miravalles and Tenorio.

Horseback Riding near the Five, 5, Star Four Seasons Resort / Hotel, Costa RicaCowboys, Horseback Riding and Colonial Cultures - Guanacaste’s charming cities and villages attract visitors with their laid-back style and the cowboy culture of the sabaneros. See much of the above on horseback and discover the first province to be settled by the Spanish who began cattle ranching and established country fairs and rodeos. Liberia, the capital of Guanacaste, showcases a colonial atmosphere with narrow streets lined with charming, old adobe homes and churches. Nicoya, the peninsula’s largest city, offers a central plaza and an old colonial church, now a museum. Tamarindo, once a sleepy fishing village, now has a vibrant atmosphere with shops and restaurants. Guaitil, the epicentre of Chorotega indigenous art, features inexpensive souvenirs and pottery in a pre-Columbian style.

And, of course, again, Golf! - Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica’s new golf course. Designed by Arnold Palmer, the 18-hole, par-72 championship course was designed with the resort golfer in mind. Spanning over 125 acres, this beautiful piece of property sits on the tip of the Papagayo Peninsula, nestled in the mountainside along the Pacific Ocean. Twelve holes feature spectacular ocean views. The course plays 6,788 yards from the Championship tees for the low handicap golfer, but is accessible to golfers at all levels, with four other sets of tees. From the forward tees, for example, the course plays only 4,880 yards. Other features of the course include a clubhouse, golf pro shop, as well as clinics and private lessons taught by Golf Pro, Rob Oosterhuis, originally from Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas at Las Colinas, and his team. The course is located immediately north of Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica, just a quick ride from the lobby via Suburban shuttle service.
