Only a few hours North of Alajuela, Boca Tapada and the surrounding area is a literal hotbed of of nature. Nearby, resting on the edge of 1250 acres of virgin tropical rainforest is La laguna del Lagarto Lodge. Of this lodge biologist Richard Whitten wrote "La Laguna del Lagarto lodge and the surrounding tropical forests has provided me with the greatest selection of remarkable natural history…I have so far visited in Costa Rica."
This is no exaggeration as the area is home to three species of monkey, iguanas, basilisks; both red & green poison dart frogs, caimans, and over 350 species of birds. Parrots, a favorite for many, are here in abundance, as well as other rare birds like the Great Green Macaw and the Chestnut Bellied Heron.
It was in 1989 that Vinzenz Schmack, previously a bank executive, started his lodge with just 4 rooms, and no electricity. Even though he had purchased the property, 110 hectares of prime rainforest, in 1981, he had not been sure what to do with it. He had had many ideas before a friend mentioned to him the idea to build a small lodge, which he immediately liked.
Later in 1992 with the construction amplified to 20 rooms, he officially opened for business. Since that time as word spread it has become a very popular tourist destination, and in fact his leading the way has also encouraged the locals and others in the area to follow suit with the idea of conservation instead of clearing. This includes his neighbor, owner of 400 hectares of rainforest connecting to his own parcel. Thanks in great part to his vision; at least a small jewel of nature will continue unmolested for years to come.
