A Day In The Life
of a Guanacaste Resident 3:

By
Laura Hahn
Jan. - Feb. 2002

For those of you who live in the San José area, you can treat your taste buds to the culinary delights of a multitude of restaurants, each providing you with mouth-watering entrees. For those of us living in Guanacaste, we don't have quite so many options, so when something good comes to town we like to spread the word and brag about our fine dining experience for months.

Food !

Good food

Right now I'd like to brag about the restaurant under the Cave Bar in Playas Del Coco. I don't even know if this restaurant has a name, but that's not important. No, the food is what's important. I haven't had a baked potato in the three and a half years that I've lived in this country. This potato even had sour cream, cheddar cheese and BACON.

I ordered the chicken breast with asparagus sauce and my companions went straight for the filet mignon and the New York cut. It was a quiet meal as we plowed into our large portions. We even got rolls with our dinner, the service was excellent, and the prices were very reasonable. Since we've now added some businesses to the discount program from Playas Del Coco, we will be expecting to see our fellow members south of the mountains; and when you come up to visit us, we can be proud to send you to our newest addition. (I don't have this restaurant signed up for a discount yet, but it's well worth the dining experience.)

Tortelini with Gorgonzola !

Good food

Another new, but old, addition to our area is El Cangrejo in Playa Panama, which is under new management. We all feared that the new managers would change the generous portioned seafood platter, but our fears were for not. The food is better than ever and the way the food is displayed only adds to your eating enjoyment.

Many of you are probably scoffing, and saying "Big Deal!", but when you realize that we must drive over 3½ hours to San José to buy decent cheddar cheese, you may take more pity on us. We usually have two choices of food here, typical or Italian, and it is a delight to see restaurants taking a chance on a theme menu and specializing in what they are good at. I just wanted to take the time and let these people know that we appreciate the risk they are taking to bring us a quality meal.

When people ask me what I miss the most about the United States, my number one answer is food. What I wouldn't give for a bowl of cheese filled Tortelini with Gorgonzola sauce, or a juicy bacon cheeseburger. MMmmmm...food! Luara Hahn is the representative of the ARCR branch in Guanacaste.
