A "Hair-Raising" Experience:

Getting a good haircut or having your hair styled in a Spanish speaking country is no easy task. Most non-Spanish speakers usually leave the barbershop or beauty parlor less than satisfied.


Sign language or gestures just don't work !

Learning the Language

This is mainly due to not being able to communicate their desires in Spanish. Sign language or gestures just don't work. Learning some of the phrases and vocabulary below will give a Spanish speaking barber or beautician a better idea of what you want done with your hair.

  I want to get a hair cut     Quiero cortarme el pelo  
  barber shop     La peluquería  
  Shampoo     champú  
  barber shop     la barbería  
  to comb hair     peinarse  
  to brush hair     cepillarse  
  haircut     corte de pelo  
  moustache     el bigote  
  long     largo  
  bald     calvo  
  short     corto  
  sideburns     las patillas  
  to even up     emparejar  
  beard     la barba  
  cut very short     rapar  
  gray hair     las canas  
  cut a little off the top     cortar un poquito de arriba  
  shave     afeitar  
  cut a little off the back     cortar un poquito de atrás  
  shave     rasurar  
  cut a little off the sides     cortar un poquito de los lados  
  close (shave)     a ras  
  in front     por delante  
  part hair     hacerse la raya

Here is your Costa Rican expression or tiquismo for the week: Pelarse el coco. Means to cut off all of your hair or to cut it very, very short. (note. coco means literally - coconut.)
