Miravalles Geothermal Project (English)
To Bagaces 194 kms northwest of San José along the Interamerican Highway. From there to Guayabo , 30 kms north of Bagaces. From there on the road to Fortuna it is 2 kms before reaching this village, you have to turn left for 2-3 kms.
At the southern foot of Miravalles Volcano, 700 mts. above sea level, at a place known as Las Hornillas, there is terminal solfataric activity, which is evidenced by bubbling mudpots and vents that expel gases and hot vapours. Some mudpots are as deep as 1,5-2 meters with a diameter of 5-6 metres.
It is at this site where there is a project going on to harness geothermal energy and transform it into electric energy. Las Hornillas is very easy to reach (less than 400 mts.) but walk carefully due to the irregular terrain and the extremely stron winds (over 100kms / hr)
