Puntarenas

To get to the Playa Montezuma, one has to drive around the Peninsula of Nicoya on gravel roads. The most expedite route is to take the Paquera ferry-boat from Puntarenas and from there continue the road Paquera- Cóbano- Cabuya- Montezuma. If you are already in the Nicoya Peninsula you can take the route San Pablo- Jicarol- Playa Naranjo- Paquera- Cóbano- Montezuma.

Montezuma is part of the Gulf of Nicoya. It is a small beach of big contrasts and diverse natural environments. On the road to it, the dry forests mingle with the river and marine surroundings. Small streams flow down from the hills of sedimentary and volcanic rock, forming waterfalls and pools, ideal spots to escape the intense heat of the summer. The rivers and streams crisscross the wide but rocky beach, which extends eastward to the solitary and beautiful Cocal, Cocalito and Quizales beaches, and westward to the Cabo Blanco Strict Nature Reserve. All of these coastal sites posess very special features and can be explored on foot mainly at low tide.

On the way to Cabo Blanco, some 7.5 kms from the village of Montezuma and 450 metres off the coast, lies Muertos Island (3,5 hectares), which has been converted into a cemetary for the inhabitants of the coastal village of Cabuya. The island is connected to the shore at low tide by a chain of rocks that allow access to the cemetery, but is completely cut off when the tide comes in. Consequently, funerals have to be coordinated with the tides rather than with the wishes of the mourners. This is the only burial ground in Costa Rica located on an uninhabited island. The small island is surrounded by wide, rocky platforms that abound with marine life, and ctenosaurs thrive on the higher terrain.

Without a doubt, Montezuma and its environs are among the best places for camping, relaxing and enjoying the wilderness.
