The route to take is from Liberia to Guardis (20 kms.), crossing the bridge over the River Tempisque and continuing 500 metres to the second right-hand turning. There is a sign at the end, 3 kms. before Hacienda La Culebra. The distance between Guardia and Iguanita is 17 kms. (During rainy season the beach may not be accessible)
This is an unusually beautiful beach with grey sands bathed by the blue waters of Culebra Bay. It is located between dead and active cliffs, rent by a ravine of Quebrada Grande, the waters of which flow into an estuary with 24 hectares of mangrove swamp. This kind of plant growth stands out for its scenic beauty and the touch of green it brings in stark contrast to the dry landscapes of the coast and the surrounding hills, which are brightened only by the yellow flower of the wild cotton, the pink mayflower blossoms or the thorny mesquite shrubs that cast a meagre shadow over the burning sands.
To the northwest and southeast of this beach, which is 1,5 kms. long, there are rocky platforms at the base of the cliffs that are exposed at low tide. The view from this sites and the beach itself includes the arid peninsula to the west of the bay and the rocky shore betweem Panamá and Iguanita Beaches.
This lonely strech of coastline is dry during the summer (December-April), but as green as any other part of Costa Rica during the rest of the year. It enjoys a very healthy climate of dry heat with an average annual temerature of 27,5°C. There are clear skies and high, brilliant sun. The beach is ideal for camping.
