Private Buses or Rent a Car are the best choices !!
I’d rather go by bus.

about sailing to Tobruk on the Royal Yacht.
AAround the Country
Don’t be afraid to travel anywhere by bus, even if you get lost and wind
up somewhere other than where you planned. Chances are it will be a
pleasant adventure. It always was for us.
For excursions from San José into the countryside, we took either direct,
first-class buses to destinations such as Jacó, Quepos or Puerto Viejo
(maximum fare is under US $15), or semi-local buses to Cartago,
Alajuela, Orosí and Heredia (about US $1).
When we vacation in Costa Rica, we usually ratchet down our lifestyle
and travel by bus. It’s more ecological and there is no better place to be
environmentally aware than Costa Rica.
On the other hand, driving
around Costa Rica in a rental car is a popular and convenient way to see
the country. You can stop to take pictures, go down side roads or change
your mind about your destination en route. See driving tips.
