Costa Rica is a magical land !!
Never a ship sails out of the bay But carries my heart as a stowaway ~ Roselle Mercier Montgomery, writer, 1874-1933A Playa Ocotal Playa Ocotal is the southernmost beach in this bay. Its gentle cove is home to sailing yachts at anchor and steep hills that come right to the water at each end of the bay. For tranquility, scenery, white sand and swaying trees this was our favorite. The El Ocotal Beach Resort and Marina (_ 506/670-0321, fax 670- 0083, www.ocotalresort.com, $$$$$) is a lovely hotel with rooms, bungalows and suites set up on a rocky bluff above the gentle bay. Fabulous views and a very good restaurant, with a large veranda for al fresco dining. Look for lizards that hide in the rocks as you hike by and listen to birds sing in the trees. Two pools and a lovely beach. They also operate a casual beachside restaurant that we found delightful, Father Roosters. With wooden plank floors, billiards and foot-tapping music from a stereo, this bar and restaurant is fun to eat in or to hang out and drink. Try the Tequila Matar, a tequila to die for.
