|Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge|
A large, swampy, wildlife mecca !!
A nation is only as good as its women. ~ Muhammad Ali, boxerIn a remote area of the north lies the large, swampy, wildlife mecca, Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge. It’s a long drive (124 km/77 miles north of Ciudad Quesada), but of huge interest for dedicated eco-travelers, naturalists and birders. A large lake covers much of the 9,969-hectare/ 24,623-acre park; most sightseeing is done by boat. The best time to visit here is the rainy season – more water means more birds.
NICARAGUA SIDE TRIP Just to the north of Caño Negro is Los Chiles, on the border of Nicaragua. If you’re thinking of crossing the border, it may be possible to travel by boat from Los Chiles to San Carlos on Lake Nicaragua. Immigration is closed weekends. A much easier and safer way to get a Nicaraguan passport stamp is to go back south and take a boat trip to Tortuguero from Muelle, near Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí. The boat stops at a Nicaraguan customs and guardhouse and everyone must show ID.
