The agricultural area west of San José is rich farmland !!
Never a ship sails out of the bay But carries my heart as a stowaway ~ Roselle Mercier Montgomery, writer, 1874-1933ACoffee Country Good coffee is like friendship: rich and warm and strong. ~ Inter-American Coffee Bureau advertisement The agricultural area west of San José is rich farmland and, because of its climate and altitude, a great coffee-growing region. The towns scattered along this route are friendly, quaint and un-touristy – yet with much for tourists to see. We often make this trip – Alajuela, Grecia, Sarchí, Naranjo, then either Zarcero or San Ramón or both – into a day or overnight journey to wander the country lanes. You can continue to the scenic route to La Fortuna and Arenal. Reach these towns by side roads or go quickly via the Inter-American Highway.
